What’s the Deal With Lady Gaga’s “Applause”?
It seemed that, at least for a while, Lady Gaga and her team were in complete control of everything related to ARTPOP, her third studio album set to drop on November 11. But last Saturday, parts of lead single “Applause” surfaced not long after track “Burqa” was already online.
When the leak occurred, she tweeted, "Lord, in HEAVEN WHY […] YOU JUST COULDNT WAIT THIS IS TOO MUCH FOR ONE SATURDAY"
Fans notified Universal Music to take down the leaks, but the singer, instead, had “Applause” officially released on August 14 to radio stations and iTunes. She called it a: "POP MUSIC EMERGENCY"
On the other hand, “Applause” failed to impress listeners, with critics calling the singer a “flop” and “irrelevant.” Gaga, in response, shot back, saying: "Dont focus on ANY blogger criticism. I have been a producer/songwriter/musician for over 10 years. Trust the artist bloggers are not critics."
On the other hand, it’s hard not to side with the singer. Roughly the same time the track came out, its producer DJ White Shadow went to MTV News on August 14 to talk about ARTPOP and “Applause,” describing the single coming from a place of pain: “when she wrote that [song] ... she was hurting that whole entire time. And after she figured out what it was that was hurting and figured how severe that was and had that time off, we had time to go back and like really sit around and craft and take it to the next level."
The singer’s Haus of Gaga took this a step further. In spite of the fact that a good deal of Gaga’s fame comes from social media, she and her team put out a promo video telling fans to not buy “Applause” and ARTPOP. Think it will work?
But news and reception isn’t getting better for the Mother Monster. Her duet with Cher, rumored since the end of 2011 but not actually heard, finally surfaced online this week, but in a very rough version. Cher wasn’t pleased with the leak, and neither were critics.
At the same time the single came out, Gaga filmed its lyric video at Micky’s nightclub in West Hollywood. If you haven’t seen it, watch it below:
