Was Brian Wilson Really Fired from the Reunited Beach Boys?
The Beach Boys’ reunion for their 50th anniversary and new album That’s Why God Made The Radio appeared to be a new chapter in the band’s lengthy history. But, last week, their reunion seemed over before they really took off. Apparently, three members, including Brian Wilson, were fired and weren’t aware of it until Mike Love made the announcement.
Love, at the end of last week, responded in an editorial published in the Los Angeles Times. He claims that Wilson, along with Al Jardine and David Marks, were not fired from the group. Instead, Love, along with Bruce Johnston, were already booked in advance to tour as the Beach Boys. Love and Johnston have been touring with this lineup for the past 13 years. Love wrote: "I did not fire Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys. I cannot fire Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys. I am not his employer. I do not have such authority. And even if I did, I would never fire Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys. I love Brian Wilson."
Love claims that the five-piece was reunited for a limited run of touring. Wilson, on the other hand, expressed his disappointment in September, saying: "I'm disappointed and can't understand why he (Love) doesn't want to tour with Al, David and me. We are out here having so much fun. After all, we are the real Beach Boys."
The Beach Boys’ original lineup was reportedly set to make a follow-up to That’s Why God. Do you think they’ll remain together, or will this news drive the members apart?
