It's still surprising that Pharrell didn't keep the "Wanna Love U Girl" beat for himself, a lightfooted Neptunes joint with cascading synths and shakers that invoke falsettos and Miami (or perhaps that's just the video for the original version, which features all manner of Jet Ski and Hype Williams' present split-screen obsession). But P fancies himself a rapper, financing his "Willy Wonka decor" by hawking loads of blue-eyed soul, and with Robin Thicke playing urbane crooner-seducer on the airy high range with dedicated portions of soul gusto, finally Justin Timberlake can go be Peaches in peace (see: "SexyBack" aka "Sexy Jus Died").

Thicke's vibrato game is locked (per "Shooter", his heavy-ro collabo with BFF Lil Wayne), but on "Wanna Love U Girl" he simplifies, perhaps too distracted by the "Girl" in question for fanciful vocal tricks, leveling his love letter like a hot promise: "When she's around nothing else matters/ Untouchable, she's got her own forcefield/ Wanna love you girl/ Wanna love you/ Oooh." Unfortunately, Busta Rhymes, allegedly enamored of Thicke's voice after hearing "Love U" in a Miami club, jumped on the remix and used it as an opportunity to romance a girl while airing out his ex, which not only garners him no play, but lightens Thicke's devotion load. But you know, it's a way to milk out an aging lead single until the album drops.
