Video Revealed for Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful”
Announced as the first single off the highly-anticipated Great Gatsby soundtrack, “Young and Beautiful” appeared like an odd choice. The strings and plaintive vocals – routine for Del Rey more than a year since she rocketed to fame – hark back to some mid-20th century pop, with a retro vibe that feels anachronistic in Gatsby’s roaring-1920s-meets-modern-glitz aesthetic.
While The Great Gatsby soundtrack is poised to do well on the Billboard 200, predicted to debut at No. 2 after its May 7 release, “Young and Beautiful” hasn’t had the same type of luck. As mediocre chart performance for Del Rey, the single opened at No. 82 and then dropped down to No. 95 on the Hot 100 last week.
Although the song, really, is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it effort from this modern-day chanteuse, a video still came out, debuting on May 10 – the same day the film entered theaters.
While the sound is out of place with Baz Luhrmann’s vibe, Del Rey’s look fits perfectly. Continuing to appropriate gang culture into her image, Del Rey brings together the style of a 1920s jazz singer and contrasts that with tattooed tears and diamond-studded hoops. It’s as if Del Rey (or her management) wants to mature but can’t shake off her whole Lolita in the Hood/Gangsta Nancy Sinatra shtick.
