Almost everyone can look at a time in their lives when they needed to make a change but, for whatever reason, were unable to do it until something major happened to push them in the right direction.  This time, it’s Travie McCoy’s turn to talk about his own inspirational moment.

Struggling with a drug addiction, the member of Gym Class Heroes has opened up about the reason he became sober.  In a recent interview for VH1’s Behind the Music, he explained that he had tried to go to rehab four times to stop abusing prescription medication but it had never worked.

Finally, in 2009, he and Katy Perry broke up and it was the final push he needed.  He explained that he had grown tired of “trying to feed” the monster and knew that he would die if he didn’t do something to make things better.

The singer who is well known for his collaboration with Bruno Mars, “Billionaire,” said that he started using drugs in his teens but realized one day that his years of abuse had begun to really take a toll on his health.  He looked in the mirror after awakening and immediately going to the medicine cabinet and was captivated by his own reflection for a full thirty minutes.  He remembers thinking: “'Who is this guy?' My face was sunken in. I had these awful rings under my eyes. It wasn't me. I knew if I didn't do something, I was gonna end up dead. That was the morning I decided to break the cycle."

That sounds like a truly terrifying and scary situation. Fortunately, that is in his past and his future is already much brighter.

Anyone who is interested can catch the full interview tonight on VH1 at 9 p.m. ET.
