Totally Sounds Like: Madonna vs. Gaga

In the first instalment of this weekly feature, we compare the controversial songs. Totally Sounds Like: Madonna vs. Gaga

We’re starting a new weekly feature called “Totally Sounds Like” which looks at songs that share striking similarities.  Surely, you’ve heard a single that made you stop and think because you’re reminded of something else.

To get the ball rolling, let’s start with something super easy and widely acknowledged.  Lady Gaga released “Born This Way” in 2011 and, almost immediately, people listened to the chords and knew they had heard them before.  The progression and chord changes are very, very similar to Madonna’s 1989 hit “Express Yourself.”  What’s even more interesting is that, in addition to sounding alike, the messages are similar – embrace who you are.

Gaga definitely faced criticism over this and Madonna herself has made mention of the fact that she feels the younger singer stole from her.  When Gaga recently discussed what she described a “tough year,” she referenced the feud and said called it an "incessant dragging of the most important single of my career in dead-beaten-horse-mud."

Truly, though, if it was the most important song of her career, she has to admit that the song does, indeed, sound a lot like Madonna’s. Just admit the similarity, show respect for an artist who has been around longer and everyone will be happy.  Instead, Gaga continues to play into the drama.

Haven’t heard the comparison?  Here’s a mash-up!
