The Roots Are Nearly Done Working on a New Concept Album
While The Roots have been making music since the 1990s, they’re prominent in the present as Jimmy Fallon’s band, first for Late Night and now for The Tonight Show. Although the group is said to be making their transition, their biggest project right now is a new album called …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin.
Member Black Thought spoke with XXL about this project in a recent interview, explaining how the release is a concept album and that the group is nearly done. However, unlike Undun: “it’s not just about just one kind of character, we create quite a few different characters in this record. It’s satire, but in that satire it’s an analysis of some of the stereotypes perpetuated in not only the hip-hop community, but in the community. I don’t know if that makes any sense.”
Black Thought then went to explain how they came up with the characters listeners should expect to hear: “We created some of these characters that we kind of see. We as artists, musicians, Philadelphians, New Yorkers, we as black men, we’re familiar with very many of these characters, and we kind of introduce them to the rest of the world in a manner that makes them more easily understood than maybe seeing it.”
Like Undun, another concept album, Cousin is expected to be on the shorter side, at under 40 minutes, but the band appear to be finalizing a few more tracks before the release is complete.
