Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa Aiming to be Next Cheech and Chong with Movie, Album
With their collaborative album out this week and a movie expected soon, Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa discussed their inspiration and goals for Mac & Devin Go to High School, a stoner comedy for the 2010s. Snoop, who idolized Cheech and Chong’s movies when growing up, hopes to follow in the comedians’ footsteps. He said: "They smoked joints, they were funny, they were cool and they would get into real situations. To me, that's what me and Wiz represent. A lot of kids growing up don't understand who Cheech and Chong are. So we're the modern-day image of them. We're bringing it back."
On the same note, Khalifa mentioned: "There have been others to pave the way for us, so we're just trying to keep it going, and tell our own stories."
Mac & Devin casts Khalifa as a high school valedictorian who only thinks about academics. He loosens up when meeting Snoop’s character, a teen with street smarts. Only meeting a year ago, the two came up with the idea for the movie and soundtrack while working in each others’ videos. About meeting and mentoring Khalifa, Snoop said: “Through us doing each other’s videos we found time to sit down and hang out. I decided to say, ‘Hey, look Wiz let’s not just do videos how about we create a movie where we flashback and we go to high school.’ And we just take everybody on a ride with two characters that people can really relate to, Devin [Oglestreet] and Mac With The Sack. So we created the idea. Got with my homeboy [Pookie] Brown. He wrote it out, we applied it, shot it, got it did, and it’ll be in a theatre near you real soon.”
During the making of the movie, Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, Calif., reportedly halted filming because of the marijuana theme. That didn’t stop them, according to Snoop: "We heard about it, but it didn't mean much to us. We got done what we needed to get done. It was shot and promptly prepared."
