Smashing Pumpkins Already Working on New Album
The Smashing Pumpkins delighted fans by coming back together for their Oceania album which was released earlier this yaer. It was so well-received that the band is already working on their next album.
Frontman, Billy Corgan said that the Pumpkins have no plans of disappearing again but, in discussing the sound of the new material he says that it "definitely seems like it's going to be more of a rockin' affair."
The crazy thing is that he doesn’t even expect it to be years and years until it’s ready, unless the time it took for the group to follow-up from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. He is hoping for a release date of December 2013 although he admits: "that's really ambitious, because we're still touring, and I've never been successful writing on tour. I don't even try. So even if we went into the studio in November when we come off of this tour, it's still pretty ambitious to have it out by then."
If they’ve already pushed out a few songs, though, then it’s more than possible for him to meet that goal. It does boil down to motivation, though, and for Corgan, that’s getting tougher and tougher to drum up. He explains that back when they first emerged into the music industry, you could really see how music lovers were responding by album sales. Nowadays, instead of a million copies sold, 100,000 might be purchased and as he points out, two million people could be listening to it through illegal downloads or file sharing and you just would never know it.
He’s really got a point.
Corgan does say that he feel the group has a lot of “good energy” around them now, in fact, it’s “the best energy that's been around the Smashing Pumpkins since probably '97."
I wouldn’t disagree. It really seems like a good time for them to try to really launch a real comeback.
