Sara Bareilles Grateful to Katy Perry for Making a Song Similar To Hers
While any other artist would be mad if someone makes a song similar to theirs, this is not the case with Sara Bareilles. Last year, Katy Perry's hit single "Roar" had a sound quite similar to Bareilles' earlier-released tune "Brave." But instead of being bitter at KP, Bareilles says she ain't got no beef with her because the similarities in the two songs got her own song noticed.
Speaking to CBS Sunday Morning, Bareilles said: "I mean, I can't say that I think that they don't sound similar. I've known Katy a really long time and we're friends. And at the end of the day, it was really only good for my song. So, thank you, Katy Perry for that!"
Bareilles originally composed "Brave" with the LGBT angle in her mind, but eventually ended up making it relevant for a much larger audience.
About the song – which she co-wrote with Fun guitarist Jack Antonoff – she added: "It just felt like I was watching the song take flight and take on a life of its own. It was becoming something bigger than it had even been intended to be. And that's always - oh my gosh, what an amazing hope for something you create."
"Brave" was a part of Bareilles' third studio album "The Blessed Unrest" – which has earned a nomination in the Album of the Year category at the upcoming Grammy Awards.
