Russell Brand Gives Katy Perry the House in Divorce Settlement
Though many divorces may end harshly, at least Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s transition seems to be going smoothly and amicably. Recent reports state that Russell Brand has given up their house to Katy in the property settlement agreement.
The $6.5 million house was bought by the couple in June of last year and features seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms. Russell, a comedian from the UK, and Katy, international pop singer, never agreed to signing a prenup. Even now, they say they do not regret it and just want the other to be happy.
Russell was entitled to $20 million of Katy’s money, half of what she earned during the course of their marriage, however he refused to accept it. One source says of the couple, "Russell is a very simple person who doesn’t need much to make him happy. He would never take money that [Katy] earned. That’s not Russell. And if it was the other way around, Katy wouldn’t have taken it either. They respect each other too much."
Another source adds, “He doesn't want Katy's money. He's happy to walk away with the money he earned -- which is far less than what Katy raked in.”
Though no divorce is a happy occasion, it’s nice to see a couple who can do it so seamlessly without any drama. Perry and Brand began dating after they met at the MTV Video Music Awards in September of 2009 and became engaged in December while vacationing in India. They then married in October 2010 in India, the same location the Russell proposed in. After 14 months of marriage, Brand filed for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences”. The divorce will not be official until July 2012. This was one celebrity couple that I was rooting for. Hopefully they can both find their happiness.
