Q-Tip Signs to Kanye West's Music Label
While this shouldn't be a huge surprise, Q-Tip has finally sealed his long-time partnership with Kanye West, officially signing to West's G.O.O.D. Music label.
The A Tribe Called Quest rapper has worked with West extensively, producing My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Watch the Throne, West's joint album with Jay-Z. Now it's West who will return the favor.
G.O.O.D. Music and Def Jam will put out Q-Tip's fourth solo album, tentatively titled The Last Zulu, sometime early next year. It'll be his first solo album since 2009's Kamaal the Abstract.
In a statement, Q-Tip said:
"I'm excited to be a part of the great iconic Def Jam label. I'm humbled to be a part of such a storied history. To reconnect with [Universal Republic chairman and CEO] Barry Weiss is a great thing. As far as G.O.O.D. Music, I'm excited to solidify my working relationship with Kanye, and I look forward to all the opportunities that lie ahead in our partnership. I will do my best to present the most cutting-edge music I can."
Does that mean we'll see Q-Tip on the upcoming G.O.O.D. Music group album, which is set to debut this spring? It's likely. The album's first single, "Mercy," was released last week and features contributions from Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz. Other artists on G.O.O.D.'s roster include John Legend, Kid Cudi, Big Sean, Cyhi Da Prynce, Mr. Hudson and Mos Def.
