“Pretty Hurts” Selected as Next Single from Beyonce’s Self-Titled Album
To follow-up “Drunk in Love,” Beyonce announced that “Pretty Hurts” will be her next single.
According to MStarz, the track wasn’t originally intended for the singer. Instead, songwriter Sia Furler sent it first to Katy Perry – who, apparently, claimed she didn’t get the email. Then, Furler sent it along to Rihanna’s manager, who held onto it for eight months. Beyonce’s team was next, and they took the track.
The pop star revealed the track selection when she ended up on the Time 100 cover this week, with the magazine’s website going ahead to debut the video.
For those unfamiliar with Beyonce, the singer’s fifth number-one album opens with “Pretty Hurts,” with each track further available in video format. “Pretty Hurts” features a beauty pageant theme, with Queen B going through the motions of preparation, from Botox to implied vomiting at one point.
To promote the video and the message behind it – even Beyonce comes in second place – Time and the singer have started the What Is Pretty campaign. Fans, to start a discussion about beauty standards, are asked to upload their photos to Instagram with hashtag #WhatIsPretty accompanying.
The single is expected to enter radio rotation by May.
Beyonce debuted at the end of 2013, shooting to the top of the Billboard 200 its first week. Since that point, the release that could only be purchased in full has gone onto sell 3 million copies worldwide.
