Phillip Phillips Announces “Home” Follow-up, New Single “Gone, Gone, Gone”
American Idol Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips is at a perilous and crucial point in his nascent career. With a successful debut album behind him and one high-charting single, he has to follow it up with something equally strong. Such a track has potential to give him a Daughtry-like career or push him into obscurity like Kris Allen, who saw his contract with RCA Records end in 2012.
Phillips announced his sophomore single as track “Gone, Gone, Gone,” which will officially be released in the first half of 2013. A lyric video has since appeared, and Phillips performed the track on Today.
Although Phillips wrote or co-wrote a large percentage of the material on The World from the Side of the Moon, “Gone, Gone, Gone” was written for him. About the track, he told Yahoo Canada: “It’s a good little love song. Todd Clark and Derek Fuhrmann, they wrote [it] and brought it to me and I thought it was a beautiful song. The more I’ve played it live, the more I’ve made it more my own and people seem to really connect with it and really enjoy it so I’m excited to see how that song’s going to do.”
Believe it or not, some of the material on Phillips’ debut was written before he won the latest season of AI. The album, meanwhile, opened at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, and in support, the singer and guitar player is scheduled to tour with Matchbox 20 in 2013.
