52 years after his death, Buddy Holly has re-staked a place in the mainstream thanks in large part to a bevy of high-profile artists, including Paul McCartney, The Black Keys, and Lou Reed.

"Rave On Buddy Holly," an album comprised of covers recorded by McCartney, Reed, The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Cee Lo Green, Kid Rock, Florence and the Machine and more, has quickly become one of the most hotly-anticipated albums of the summer.

When "Rave On Buddy Holly" was announced in late April, the only problem many had with the project was waiting until its June 28 release date. Luckily enough, four tracks - from McCartney, The Black Keys, Modest Mouse and The Strokes' Julian Casablancas - have hit the Internet over the last week.

After listening to all four tracks, the most exciting thing about this project has become clear. Each track is aesthetically pleasing to fans of McCartney, The Strokes, Modest Mouse and The Black Keys and, most impressively, all four sound like the original Holly tracks. The logical progression, therefore, is fans of these four bands - along with fans of the other 15 artists whom contributed to "Rave On Buddy Holly" - will go one step further and listen to Holly's catalog of songs.

This project is important not only because it provides new music from some of contemporary music's best artists but also because it figures to provide a greater appreciation for Holly's work.

The tracklist from "Rave On Buddy Holly" is as follows:

  • 01 The Black Keys: "Dearest"
  • 02 Fiona Apple and Jon Brion: "Every Day"
  • 03 Paul McCartney: "It's So Easy"
