When they first emerged Take That may not have seemed like great performers, but with hindsight (and having witnessed the seemingly endless parade of much less talented clones in the decade that followed) they begin to seem almost bearable.

At least they know their strengths and weaknesses in their new, grown up incarnation as they return with their first album in a decade, Beautiful World. Patience, the first single released from it, is a power ballad and a half, slickly produced and slippery with strings, allowing Gary Barlow’s voice to shine. The song itself is fair but nothing to write home about, its tentative phrasing showing a keen understanding of early teen psychology.

A plead for understanding while broken hearts mend, its mildly emotional words are paired with soaring harmonies - perfect to snare a whole new generation of girls.
