Nicki Minaj Throws Shade Toward Iggy Azalea at BET Awards
From her days on Myspace, Nicki Minaj rose to success through the strength of her lyrics and performance. She’s turned into one of the decade’s most successful female rappers, and this past weekend, she rightly deserved the award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the BET Awards.
However, in her acceptance speech, Minaj took a shot at rappers who don’t write all of their own lyrics – be it with a co-writer or a ghostwriter. She said: “But my point is, what I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is, that when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it.”
She quickly backpedaled, saying: “No, no, no shade. No, no, no shade.”
Although the “Starships” singer didn’t specifically name any one individual, some claim she’s going after Iggy Azalea, who has co-writing credits on “Work” and “Problem.” Azalea, however, is listed as the writer of “Fancy” and “Change Your Life.”
While Azalea, because of her quick fame and looks, is an easy target, she’s far from the only rapper to be accused of working with a ghostwriter. In fact, some of the most prolific ones – like Jay-Z and Diddy, for instance – allegedly have used such an approach.
Minaj is gearing up for her third studio album, titled The Pink Print. Although an official date has not been announced, the release is expected to come out in 2014. Already, opening single “Pills N Potions” has turned into a hit, peaking at No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.
