Nicki Minaj Sings and Raps on New Single “Pills N Potions”
Spending too much time singing was a criticism many fans had of Nicki Minaj’s last effort, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.
So, after her sophomore album and its extended play version in 2012, Minaj has been toning down her image. She went back to more of a hip-hop sound with one-off singles this year, including “Lookin’ Ass” and “Yasss Bish” and then cast aside the colorful wigs and clothing for something still neutral yet sexy enough for hip-hop.
So, now as the rapper gears up for her third studio album, The Pink Print, she put out its first single, called “Pills N Potions,” which essentially compromises the two aspects of her career.
The song opens with clear vocals – not the Auto-Tuned dance-y style from tracks like “Starships” – and later leads into the rapper dropping a few verses. Essentially, this slower paced, uplifting track has Minaj doing it all – rapping and dropping the hook.
If you hadn’t had a chance to listen to it (or heard one of the “fake” versions on YouTube), hear the official track here on Soundcloud.
To lead up to The Pink Print, Minaj has been giving hints in her singles and guest appearances, with a reference to “Pills and Potions” in her recent Soulja Boy collaboration.
Right now, The Pink Print has no official release date. It comes after Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, her 2012 album that went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and produced such singles as “Starships” and “Pound the Alarm.”
