Mutya Buena Wins Rights To Sugababes Name

Original Sugababes member Mutya Buena has won a legal battle to secure the rights of her former band name. Mutya Buena Wins Rights To Sugababes Name

Mutya, who quit the top-selling pop group in 2005, announced that she would be seeking legal action to obtain rights to the "Sugababes" brand name last year after the band's final original member Keisha Buchanan left the line up.

The 26-year old singer confirmed on her private Facebook account yesterday that she had won the rights, posting: "I won the official name of the Sugababes now! I deserve this! I’m over the moon!".

However, it has been revealed on the EU Trademark website that Buena only owns the rights to use the "Sugababes" name to market certain products such as "paper, cardboard and stationery".

The ownership does not necessarily mean that current band members Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen will have to perform and record under a new name, however, this could signify an opening that allows Buena and original members Keisha Buchanan and Siobahn Donaghy to reunite under the name "Sugababes", if they wish.

Buena formed the Sugababes in 1998 with original members Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy, who left the group after their first album "One Touch". Donaghy was replaced by Heidi Range in 2001, who is now the longest running member in the band. After Mutya's departure in 2005 to pursue a solo career, the band filled her position with Amelle Berrabah. The Sugababes' fourth line-up change occurred last year in the dramatic ousting of its final original member Keisha, who was replaced by former Eurovision star Jade Ewen.

Under the guidance of Mutya and Keisha, the pop group rose to critical and commercial acclaim - crafting some of the Sugababes' most iconic hits such as 2002's 'Freak Like Me' and 'Round Round', as well as 'Hole In The Head' (2003) and 'Push The Button' (2005) - all of which were UK #1 hits.

Sugababes has to date released seven studio albums and 28 singles - the most recent being 'Freedom', which will be launched in the UK next month.
