Audioslave - Revelations Song Review

Audioslave formed from the ashes of Rage Against The Machine and Soundgarden, marrying the unique funky metal of the former with the heartfelt and Jimmy Page-alike vocals of Chris Cornell, the latter's frontman, and were immediately embraced by a rock community ever-fond of both. Previous outings have not disappointed, even though we've seen their style evolve to fit in with the ever more demanding and, clearly, angsty record-buying youth of today, and what we're left with now is a band of absurdly competent musicians and songwriters who try to place their individual stamp on the broad types of rock that make up today's market.

Revelations sees them sounding more like Soundgarden than ever in terms of song structure and Cornell's rock bellow still sounds absolutely fantastic, particularly when coupled with guitarist Tom Morello's insane noodling and electronic-sounding, scratchy solos. What sets this album - and Audioslave full stop - apart from the kind of homogenous rock sludge which clogs our airwaves is a really fantastic and lively retro edge - fans of funk as well as rock, and clearly having a whole churchful of candles to hold up to Led Zeppelin, the band consistently turn out lively, head-nodding groovers and know when to temper them with something a bit more contemplative (check out this album's Sound Of A Gun, Until We Fall and Shape Of Things To Come).

It's when they really let rip that they shine best - the stand-out track here, and certainly worth a listen if you're not a fan, is One And The Same, a full-throttle belter designed to smash speakers to bits.
