M.I.A. Documentary Leaked Over Weekend, Quickly Taken Down
Just like M.I.A.’s long-awaited album Matangi, a documentary scheduled to drop at the same time has been in the works. But after being leaked this weekend, quickly pulled, and the director dropping out of the project, could it see the light of day?
That, we don’t know yet. What occurred is, director Steve Loveridge put out the footage on his personal Tumblr account. Roc Nation, however, soon sent him the following message, stating the leak: "screws with everything we've been working on setting up Matangi."
In response, Loveridge wrote: "I really couldn't give a flying f-ck. Count me out. Would rather die than work on this... nothing personal :)"
With the director gone, M.I.A. looks to be taking the project by the horns and appears to intend to raise the funds herself to finish the documentary. She tweeted: "im gonna need @kickstarter and my fans to help make this exist , ive been black listed through normal channels !!!!!!!"
While the footage may have been pulled from Loveridge’s own Tumblr, it still exists on Vimeo. Watch it here:
While Matangi, originally scheduled for release last year, has since been pushed back to fall 2013, the first single dropped in mid-June, a track called “Bring the Noize”. At the time of the release, the rapper told Zane Lowe about the album: "It's just one of those things where I've given up at this point. I was literally going to start... putting out records from my bedroom. This was my last stab at it – I'm going to hand it in and wait for it to go out the way albums go out. If I didn't get it out right now, I would've definitely exploded."
