MGMT Stream Upcoming Third Studio Album on Rdio
Although MGMT’s self-titled release comes out officially on September 17, the band gave listeners a preview a week in advance by streaming the album today on Rdio.
Although, music-wise, streaming is one technique artists try to build up momentum, MGMT did something different this time around. While not a proper music video, an “Optimizer” visual experience of vivid colors – it’s potentially seizure-inducing – accompanies the audio.
MGMT collaborated with several visual artists to create what is being described as "an immersive audio and visual experience to accompany the new album for its full 44 minute run time."
The group announced their third release back in June, revealing the album title and track list in the process. David Friedmann, behind their debut and sophomore album, resumes his production duties.
In interviews, the duo talked about aiming for a more experimental sound, and that can somewhat be heard in the streaming audio. Regarding this, Andrew VanWyngarden explained in a Rolling Stone interview last week: "I don't even know if it's music we would want to listen to. It's just what's coming out of us. We didn't make a single compromise."
Have you had an opportunity to listen to MGMT in full yet? If not, listen to it on Rdio before September 17.
To support the release, the two are touring Europe during the fall, with dates kicking off on September 26 in Cologne.
