Lupe Fiasco at Top of the Charts
Lupe Fiasco is the winner this week with his latest album "Lasers" sitting at the top of the charts. The album was originally planned to be his third and final one - a sort of farewell gift to all his fans. However when the record was released earlier this month, fans bought up the CD in droves.
The single 'The Show Goes On' was pre-released to give fans a taste of what lay ahead - and when the album finally hit the shelves, over 200,000 copies of the album sold in its first week. It seems that Lupe has been taken by surprise. Unbelievably, when the complete album was released on 8th March, on that very day it raced to the number one position on iTunes.
There have been numerous problems between Fiasco and his record label, Atlantic Records. Disagreements occurred which led to the delay of the album. Fans have been impatient waiting for his much-anticipated release, so impatient that an online petition by thousands of fans demanded that Atlantic Records release the completed "Lasers" album. The power of the petition won.
This week Lupe Fiasco began a 16 date concert tour of the US, beginning with a performance at the travelling DUB Car Show in the L.A. Convention Center. The rapper will continue shows until May 11 concluding at Lewiston in Maine.
Lupe has stated that he is a fan of many different types of music. He has made it clear that his favourite songs are not hip-hop songs. He much prefers something like 'Somebody To Love' by Queen, but he sings hip-hop because it is just something he knows how to do. Interestingly after he got to create hip-hop, he said, "Okay, what am I going to do now?"
