Linda Perry Criticizes Katy Perry
Katy Perry and Linda Perry may share a last name, but that doesn’t mean that they share musical tastes, especially on the side of Linda, who blasted the former singer during a recent interview.
Perhaps it is genuine distaste, or perhaps it is sour grapes that the younger Perry is the second artist in history, after Michael Jackson, to have five songs from one album reach the top spot on the Billboard 100, but Linda Perry is none too impressed with the T.G.I.F. singer, and didn’t hold back from expressing her disdain toward pop superstar Perry.
"Who wants a fucking Katy Perry record? I'm sorry. You're gonna get two songs that are probably the hits that will be good, but the rest of the record is gonna be crap," said Perry to interviewer Heath Daniels in the backstage of the Ford Amphitheater, where she was scheduled to perform.
“So there’ll be no covers of Teenage Dream tonight?” asked Daniels, to which Perry bluntly stated, “No.”
The former 4 Non Blondes lead singer has written hits for Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera, and Pink, all seemingly mainstream artists, so it’s a tad surprising as to why she would be opposed to Perry’s style of music.
“She’s not looking to change the world musically… so all the power to her and everybody who is like that,” Perry added. “I’m not saying it’s bad, I’m saying it’s not what I participate in and that is the reason why the music business is in turmoil, so to say.”
Perry is entitled to her opinion, but Billboard numbers don’t lie. Music lovers adore the Teenage Dream creator, and at the end of it all, their votes are the ones that matter. Sure, Katy may not make the most introspective music around, but her tunes are delightfully catchy, and isn’t the point of music to be enjoyed?
There has been no response from Katy Perry about the interview as of yet.
