Lil’ Kim Puts Out New Single “Looks Like Money” for 39th Birthday
It has been close to a decade for Lil’ Kim to release a new album. Mix tapes aside, the first female rapper to have a No. 1 single on the Billboard 200 chart last put out a proper full-length release in 2005. Because of a year-long prison sentence, The Naked Truth didn’t get the publicity it truly deserved and thus sold fewer copies than her three previous efforts.
A fifth album has been rumored to be in the works since 2010, but after leaving a major label in 2008, the rapper born Kimberly Denise Jones has been having difficulty with distribution.
But as a gift to fans on her 39th birthday, the “Magic Stick” hip-hop star put out a new single on July 10, a track called “Looks like Money.”
“Looks Like Money,” unfortunately, isn’t entirely new. In fact, the track had originally been scheduled for 2011 but unspecified delays pushed it back indefinitely. To announce “Looks Like Money,” Lil’ Kim tweeted to fans: “Here's just a LITTLE gift from ME to U on MY birthday that U guys have been waiting for.”

While her untitled fifth album likely won’t come out any time soon, it’s important to remember the rapper racked up a number of hit singles and albums in the late 1990s and early ‘00s. Out of her total releases, collaboration “Lady Marmalade” reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while she herself scored three platinum albums – and is one of only two female rappers to do so.
Unfortunately, Jones was convicted of three counts of conspiracy and one of perjury when lying under oath and served a prison sentence starting in 2005. After lying low for a while, she appeared on Dancing With The Stars in 2009 and released mix tape Black Friday, essentially an extended dig at Nicki Minaj, in 2011.
