Lauryn Hill Performs New Single “Black Rage” in Dallas
With the exception of a live album, listeners haven’t heard much from Lauryn Hill after now-classic hip-hop release The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. More recently, the former Fugees member is co-headlining the Life is Good/Black Rage Tour with Nas, and on October 29, performed her new single.
A spoken word piece, the new track is called “Black Rage” and, according to a previous press statement, is a reaction to the “Life is Good” sentiment of the tour. She stated: “I use the performance platform as an opportunity to express the energy of that moment, and the intention behind it. I’ve been a long standing rebel against the stale, over commoditization. As artists we have opportunity to help the public evolve, raise consciousness and awareness, teach, heal, enlighten and inspire in ways the democratic process may not be able to touch. So we keep it moving.”
Their tour, together at all dates, lasts until the end of November, with Nas doing a solo show at the end of December. Hill’s performance can be watched here:
More recently, Wyclef Jean discussed his relationship with Hill in his new book, particularly about her first child with Rohan Marley. Jean claims Hill told him the child was his, although he later backtracked, explaining he didn’t want to defame his former bandmate’s character.
Hill, in a different issue, addressed three years of tax evasion with a Tumblr entry. The rapper and singer apparently failed to file her returns for 2005 through ’07.
