Lady Gaga To Ring In New Year's Eve
With New Year's Eve on the way, Lady GaGa, with the help of all her Little Monsters in the US, will connect with her gigantic fan club in Japan via a TV link up. As happens every year, the iconic crystal ball will be dropped in New York City's Times Square on New Year's Eve. This year the Mother Monster will help the city's mayor, Michael Bloomberg.
Each year the NY mayor selects a special guest to "help him" guide in the new year by pressing the button to begin the countdown. Previous celebs have included Mohammed Ali, Colin Powell and Bill Clinton. Lady GaGa is a NY native who has brought fame and honour to the Big Apple.
As part of "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin Eve with Ryan Seacrest" in the US, GaGa will simultaneously appear in Japan on NHK's equivalent broadcast called "Kohaku Uta Gassen".
Big ... the viewership is huge in telecasting terms. The show in the Land of the Rising Sun boasts an average viewership of over 37% (according to last year's screening). The Japanese show will present the live performance by GaGa as well as a recorded message from her about the earthquake/tsunami and subsequent nuclear accident that devastated the nation in March.
Lady GaGa visited Japan twice since the disaster, and has raised over $1million in aid through selling the "We Pray for Japan" charity bracelets. Despite the radiation scare, she did not cancel any of her concerts in the country, helping spread the message that the country is safe to visit.
Recently she also earned praise from the US Ambassador to Japan, John V. Roos, who said, "I had breakfast with some U.S.-Japan think-tank experts who said to me, Mr. Ambassador, what can we do in order to strengthen the strategic, economic and people-to-people relations between Japan and the United States?" In reply, he said "I had one answer. Lady GaGa."
