Lady Gaga Debuts “Applause” Video on ‘Good Morning America’
Last week, Lady Gaga’s first ARTPOP single “Applause” leaked, which led the Mother Monster to release the track ahead of schedule. Her promotional efforts continue as planned, including an appearance on Good Morning America today in which she debuted the single’s video.
Regarding the track, which sounds like a synth pop-meets-modern-EDM concoction with distorted vocals from the singer, Gaga said in her interview: "I'm happy it’s in the world."
But the mixed-reviewed track aside, the actual video, whether Gaga realizes it or not, is kind of meta. The pop star spent her last album, Born This Way, shape-shifting between genres: a little ‘80s rock on “Edge of Glory” and “Judas,” a bit of country on “You & I,” some disco on “Marry The Night,” and a Madonna-like take on the title song. This type of shape-shifting, in which the singer doesn’t clearly have an identity, is on display with “Applause”: Throughout the course of this mostly black-and-white piece of performance art accompanying a middling tune, Gaga changes from Janet Jackson-referencing pop star to a swan to a goddess to what looks like a minotaur to other shapes and identities, without clearly sticking by a single one.
And perhaps the symbolism present in the Inez and Vinoodh-produced video mirrors her career: The pop star, for all her success and fans, really can’t decide who she wants to be. Some call this a “reinvention” – see Madonna’s entire career and Katy Perry’s more recent campaign for single “Roar” – while Gaga’s team calls it “performance art.”
Video aside, Gaga touched on her recent injury, which resulted in her canceling the remainder of her Born This Way Ball tour. She explained: "I couldn't do anything else, but create. I couldn’t dance. I couldn’t walk. I couldn’t anything. I sat on the couch and I worked every day and I wrote all my ideas down and I obsessed, obsessed about the music."
