Katy Perry Selects “Dark Horse” As Third ‘Prism’ Single
Katy Perry’s album Prism already generated two successful singles: “Roar” and then “Unconditionally,” a track about her relationship with John Mayer. To continue on this streak, she selected “Dark Horse” as the third official single and announced the news with a tweet on January 9.
Perry and her team selected the song for its previous performance. For those who don’t recall, “Dark Horse” and “Walking on Air” were selected as promo singles after a fan poll in the fall. Both came out before Prism hit stores, and “Dark Horse,” which features rapper Juicy J, ended up going to the top of the iTunes chart without any significant promotion. Perry told her fan base yesterday: "So... it really is the year of the Horse! Just landed in China to see Dark Horse at #1 on ITUNES US. What an unexpected, lovely, surprise."
Although certain listeners already know what the track sounds like now, the singer told reporters at the MTV VMAs in 2013 how this particular track was darker and had more of an urban vibe. At the time, she described: "It's got me, a pop artist, with a little bit of an urban kind of hip-hop-flavored background soundtrack to it."
The cover art, designed by Yao Xiao, came out this week.
