Katy Perry's "Part of Me" Fails at Box Office
Despite her seemingly relentless efforts to promote the film, Katy Perry: Part of Me, failed to impress at the box office, pulling in a measly $11.2 million over four days. If you just look at its weekend haul, it was a paltry $7.14 million. I wasn’t expecting it to pull in billions or anything but I am surprised by how low that number is. It wasn’t smart, though, to pick the Fourth of July week for the release since that is traditionally a time for big blockbusters like The Amazing Spider-Man.
It’s even more dismal when compared to other musician documentaries. Last year, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never was released just before Valentine’s Day (a smarter choice) and it pulled in a whopping $29.5 million during its opening weekend. In total, it raked in $73 million which is the most any film in this genre has earned in total.
The biggest opening goes to Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds which earned $31 million on just 683 screens back in 2008 (again, in February). Michael Jackson’s This is It fared reasonably well at $23.2 million but here’s what’s really embarrassing – Perry was even beat by The Jonas Brothers 3D Concert Experience which earned $12.5 million.
Well, it reportedly took about $12 million to make the movie so, at least, they have almost broken even already.
