Katy Perry Could Play Marilyn Monroe In New Broadway Musical

Producer Harvey Weinstein of the Weinstein Company is eyeing the ‘I Kissed a Girl’ singer Katy Perry to play the 50’s icon Marilyn Monroe in a forthcoming musical based on the movie ‘My Week With Marilyn’, according to The Improper.  The film is currently out in theaters and stars actress Michelle Williams.

According to a conversation Weinstein had with E! News he thinks Katy Perry would be perfect for the role.  "If the movie works, I would try to make it a musical and I would go to Katy first." He went on explain, "I think she can play Marilyn on the Broadway stage... I think she would be amazing."

Since Weinstein is sure the movie with Michelle Williams will fare, overall, as a success at the box office, he now wants to work on the musical that he is said to be equally confident about.  He also spoke about how impressed he was by Michelle Williams' portrayal in the movie.

"Michelle's dedication was so incredibly intense and strong and yet she was so funny practicing her waddle, practicing her wiggle and reading books like a college schoolgirl.”  Adding that "she told me she could sing, but I've heard that before. She goes, 'I can sing,' and I go, 'Really?' I was totally cynical and then she goes, 'I can dance, too.' I'm like, 'What else can you do?' and thinking, not! But then you see her and... it's just stunning. She killed it. She's so great."

According to Weinstein, the Broadway version of ‘My Week with Marilyn’ won't be coming to the stage anytime soon, giving Katy Perry enough time to reconnect and focus on her husband Russell Brand.  The twenty-six year old pop star is rumored to be having marital problems, and since wrapping up her California Dreams tour, she would like to take a break from the spotlight.

“If ‘My Week with Marilyn’ is successful, at some point, five years, ten years from now, I think Katy would be perfect to play Marilyn Monroe … on Broadway, sing those songs, do the dances,” Weinstein said.  “Katy would blow it out of the universe, and that’s the kind of Broadway show I’d like to make.”
