Katy Perry and Russell Brand Divorce

A lack of public arguments doesn’t necessarily indicate a happy marriage. Reported by TMZ on Friday, Russell Brand was spotted filing divorce papers in Los Angeles. After slightly over a year of marriage, the comedian and Katy Perry split over “irreconcilable differences.” TMZ also mentioned that the papers had “community property assets” – a possible indication that the couple had no prenup or one that does not cover all assets accumulated.

Over Christmas, the pop singer and the Get Him to the Greek star were seen without wedding rings and celebrated the holiday in different locations: Perry in Hawaii and Brand in the U.K. Us Weekly reported, at the time, that their marriage was rocky. A source said: "They had a massive fight. She was like, 'F--k you. I'm going to do my own thing.' Russell replied, 'Fine, f--k you too.' […] They haven't split up just yet, but things are not good. The fighting is getting worse. […] Katy doesn't think Russell respects her parents' Christian beliefs or her friends. […] The split may come soon, but they are both so dramatic and volatile, the relationship could become great again."

The tip, however, differs from Brand’s statement on Ellen in December, when he addressed divorce rumors. He stated at the time: "I'm really happily married ... I’m married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge. I’m still alive."

Brand, on the other hand, released a statement after the news of their divorce broke: "Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends."

Brand and Perry’s marriage lasted for 14 months. The couple met at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where Brand hosted and Perry performed. The comedian proposed to the “California Gurls” singer on New Year’s Eve 2009, and the two were married in October 2010 in India.
