Is Psy Retiring “Gangnam Style” for Good?
Korean pop singer turned worldwide superstar Psy was one of several acts for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, and “Gangnam Style,” with MC Hammer again, could have been just another performance. However, in an interview, Psy explained he plans to move past the song that garnered worldwide attention – not to mention 1 billion views on YouTube.
Speaking to MTV News, he said: "Being in Times Square on New Year's Eve is already special — it's the biggest stage in the universe — plus it's my birthday, so, with all that, it may be the ending of 'Gangnam Style.’ I mean, what better way to do it? It's my biggest and most meaningful birthday."
On the other hand, putting “Gangnam Style” to the side doesn’t mean the world – or North America – is going to see the last of the singer/rapper. Instead, listeners should be ready for new music from him in 2013. He went onto say: "The song became too popular, and so you start to have some concern about its life period," he said. "I'm really working hard on a new single right now, and I'm not saying ['Gangnam'] is ending on 'Dick Clark' — […] So let me say that in America I need a new single because 'Gangnam Style' got too popular, so I've got to write a new single."
