"If I Have My Way" Video Review
A fresh voice on the scene, she’s hit big on hooks with Jay and Nas. With her debut album to hit the streets, Chrisette doesn’t really have a strong single of her own launching. THIS song should be the single.
From what I’ve heard of the album, which she wrote the majority of, there are no standout tracks besides this one. Vocally, girl is a powerhouse. And this song shows that. However, the material gives you a glossed over feel after listening to it. Nothing grabs you right off the bat.
But from the minute the keys and hi-hat drops on this song, I stood up and listened. By the end of the song, girls straight MURDERS it (in a good way).
If the rest of the album sounded like this, it would have been a smash hit. I’m interested in seeing how this does first week. Without a strong lead-off of her own though, she may go the way of Teairra Mari. Good voice, strong material, but the machine is just not working for her. Peep game, Chrisette is fighting against Rihanna right now…Rihanna is Def Jam’s sole focus right now.
Case in point: “Umbrella” is everywhere — Chrisette Michelle? Not so much.
But again, this all subtracts nothing from this girl’s talent. But by trying to capitalize on the singles she’s appeared on, I feel they rushed out what could have been a stellar launch of what MAYBE could have been a career artist.
