Rock in Rio is a series of rock festivals held in Brazil. Known to have been the largest rock festival in the world with 1.5 million people attending the first concert back in 1985, the Rock in Rio Festival will again be in its initial home of Rio de Janeiro, beginning on September 23 and rocking-on until October 2 this year. The venue will be at an area to be built in Rio next to the old City of Rock.

Guns N' Roses are tipped to headline this year's event. According to prominent Brazilian newspaper O Globo, Rock in Rio organiser Roberto Medina has been talking with GNR frontman, Axl Rose, and an announcement is expected to be made soon. Rock in Rio has happened in Rio in 1985, 1991 and 2001. The Gunners blasted the stage in 1991 and 2001, so if negotiations are successful, this will be the third appearance of GNR.

Artists that have already been confirmed for the Rock in Rio 4 festival include: Coldplay, Sir Elton John, Katy Perry, Metallica, Motorhead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rihanna, Slipknot, Snow Patrol to name just a few.

To get an idea of the enormity of this event, the "City of Rock" where the event has been held covered an area of 250,000 square metres, 1.6 million litres of beverages were served, 900,000 hamburgers were eaten, and McDonalds sold 58,000 hamburgers in a single day which was Guinness World Record.

Guns N' Roses debut album "Appetite for Destruction" in 1987 has sold more than 28 million copies across the world, and is the highest selling album of all time. Three top 10 hits came out of this album including 'Sweet Child o' Mine' which reached the number one spot on the charts.
