Green Day Debut 15 New Tracks, Including a Tribute to Amy Winehouse, at Intimate Show

How often do bands perform a setlist full of new and unheard tracks? That’s exactly what Green Day did on August 11 at the Tiki Bar 1700 in Costa Mesa, Calif. – one of the smallest venues they’ve ever played at. The set consisted primarily of new material, but the band also performed a cover of Ozzy Osbourne’s “Goodbye to Romance” and a tribute to Amy Winehouse, titled simply “Amy.”

After the initial set, Green Day followed up their performance with an encore of hits.

After the show, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong wrote: "We have been [sic] in jamming and writing new songs for the last few months. It felt great to play these new Green Day songs live and share our 'work in progress'.. Stay tuned for more!"

As one of their smallest shows played, the Tiki Bar 1700 performance was a secret gig Armstrong announced on Twitter. With tickets on $20 a pop, the event was also an effort to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Because new material was being played, however, Green Day specified a no camera, no phone policy beforehand. That’s not to say that rough versions of the new tracks didn’t make it on YouTube.

While the large amount of new material is a possible indication Green Day is working on a new album, none of the band’s members have officially announced a release. Armstrong, however, is expected to hit the big screen at some point in a film adaptation of musical American Idiot. Helmed by Playtone, the production team behind Mamma Mia!, American Idiot will be directed by Michael Mayer, and Armstrong will resume his role as St. Jimmy.
