Gorillaz Frontman Kicks Off His Latest Project, Rocket Juice And The Moon

Damon Albarn, the brains behind English music project Gorillaz, has just created a new band with Flea and Tony Allen. Flea is the bassist for multi-Grammy award winning band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, while Tony Allen is a Nigerian drummer who is one of the co-founders of a style of music known as Afrobeat. It has been stated that Tony Allen is "perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived."

Now the name of this latest project is – wait for it – Rocket Juice And The Moon. This eye-catching name originated from someone who designed the cover for the CD. It's catchy, so they stuck with it! 

Their live debut occurred last Saturday (Oct 29) at the Barbican nightclub in London, where they showcased one of their new compositions entitled "Poison" - featured below. Comments about the evening have all been very favourable. Patrons enjoyed a night of good music from the brainchild of various artists as perceived by Albarn. Unlike some intimate concerts that develop into just a jam session, the Saturday evening exhibited the various diverse talents in the newly-developed venture.

In a recent poll run by Q magazine, Damon Albarn was voted the "fourth greatest front-man of all time". Since the formation of Gorillaz in 2001, Damon's musical genius has been behind the sale of more than 20 million albums. Although Gorillaz still produces music, Damon Albarn is directing much of his energy to this other side project. He is a notoriously prolific music creator.

The debut album of Rocket Juice And The Moon will be released early in the new year (2012) and will simply be self-titled.  Although RJATM may not appeal to everyone, it is highly likely that fans of Gorillaz will indeed be interested in the new project. And after 20 million disc sales, that's a decent sized fanbase.
