"Glamorous" Video Review

Fergie returns with the 3rd single from her solo debut album The Dutchess. Her first 2 singles went straight to #1 on the pop singles chart. For this single she shifts away from peppy party music to a slower, smooth style of r&b. At times the song veers uncomfortably close to being a rewrite of Gwen Stefani's "Luxurious," but it still sounds light and catchy on the radio.

Fergie's #1 smash single "Fergalicious" nearly sounds like a spelling bee with choruses being spelled out everywhere, particularly by will.i.am in support. In the context of the upbeat party groove, however, it was forgivable. With a signficant slowdown in tempo, I thought the spelling would fall by the wayside in "Glamorous," but I was wrong. The song kicks off with another spelling lesson G-L-A-M-O-R-O-U-S. Fortunately, I managed to move myself past this initial turnoff.

"Glamorous" amounts to a smoothed out, slowed down slice of Fergie lite. It's a tribute to the lush, rich life of a pop star that, at times, veers a bit uncomfortably close to Gwen Stefani's "Luxurious." The frequent sparks of self-referential humor present in much of Fergie's music are missing here which limits the distinctiveness of this song.

"Glamorous" is unlikely to be a 3rd #1 for Fergie, and it may even struggle for top 10 status, but it is likely to linger as pleasant pop filler on the radio for the first few months of 2007.
