Ex-Spice Girl Geri Halliwell Finished Recording Comeback Album
Delusional? Needing a quick buck? Cashing in on 1990s nostalgia? Whatever the reasoning, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell announced that she has finished recording a comeback album. At the moment, no title, release date, or singles have been specified.
Revealing the news at the debut of her evening dress collection for Next on Wednesday, the former Ginger Spice said: “The album’s pretty much finished. I’m not sure on dates yet and I won’t tell you what it sounds like, because I’d prefer to let the songs speak for themselves. But it’ll be great to be back where I belong, on stage. It won’t be long.”
Not long after she left the Spice Girls in the early ‘00s, Halliwell launched her solo career, which, while not rippling the surface of the U.S. pop charts, saw modest success in the U.K. For her upcoming album, Halliwell sought producers and songwriters who worked with the Spice Girls in the 1990s. Although no tracks have leaked, a source told the Daily Express: "This is classic Geri. Loud, brash and loads of fun. Geri is very good at making sure she gets noticed and this will be no exception to that rule."
While Halliwell’s upcoming comeback could hark back to the teen pop of the 1990s, of which the Spice Girls were a harbinger, where would she fit in the brash pop world of Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Ke$ha? Halliwell doesn’t have the reinvention prowess of Madonna (or even the singing chops, for that matter), and if her album is given any recognition, it would be for the same reasons the Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block are touring together: nostalgia for twentysomethings reliving the teen pop of their youth.
As an indicator of Halliwell’s potential comeback, Olly Murs recently declined recording a duet with the former Spice Girl: "I turned her down. I just wasn’t too sure, it didn’t feel right. She’s married and she’s got kids. I’m not sure it would work."
Much like Victoria Beckham, Halliwell has dabbled in fashion when not recording, including a putting together a collection of swimwear and another of evening gowns. Debuting this week in London, Halliwell’s Geri by Next included six dresses. At the event, the singer/designer stated: "I’ve been sketching everything myself and I’m thrilled with the results. I’ve had the opportunity to make dresses that are not stupidly expensive but still elegant enough to wear to an upmarket event."
