"Dying Day" Video Review

Her goal, for the ditty "Dying Day", was to capture "that feel like it's just being written in the living room", vowing that "after this 3 minutes of quiet, I swear we'll get this place rockin'".

Frankly, the result was so compelling, so obviously intimate, she could have attempted her entire set that way and held these 1,000 fans silently captivated. Even when they started stomping their feet along to the two-stepping number, they did it so gently that Carlile’s magnificent voice could be felt soaring overhead at all times.

Her three albums — including her striking self-titled 2005 debut and its more muscular, T Bone Burnett-produced follow-up, The Story - impressed me from the start; once you hear Carlile's voice, equal parts high Loretta Lynn sweetness and cracked Bonnie Raitt grit and fueled by Indigo Girls fire, you only want to hear her sing more, of anything. Yet I feared her presence wouldn't be half as magnetizing, and that sapped strength would turn her material formulaic.

- "She and her band offer up some candid performance and travel footage as she sings about long-lasting love and heartache on the road. While the subject is as old as music itself, she delivers it with fiery passion. Written by Tim Hanseroth, one of the twins in her band that you'll see in the video, the song comes from her latest album, Give Up the Ghost." - cmt.

- "It's hard to argue with an album with this sort of pedigree. And Carlile doesn't disappoint, returning once again with her soaring vocals, mixed musical styles, and amazing arrangements." - blogcritits.
