Drake Rep Says Ex-Girlfriend’s "Marvin's Room" Claims Are Baseless

Drake’s ex-girlfriend Ericka Lee claims she is owed co-royalties for “Marvin’s Room,” but the rapper/singer’s rep says her assertions and lawsuit are without merit. Drake Rep Says Ex-Girlfriend’s "Marvin's Room" Claims Are Baseless

Last week, Drake’s ex-girlfriend Ericka Lee filed a lawsuit against the singer, claiming she is being excluded from co-writing royalties for track “Marvin’s Room.” Today, Drake’s rep stated Lee’s claims are unfounded, telling Rolling Stone: “This claim is entirely without merit and our client has not engaged in any wrongful conduct. Ericka Lee consented to the use of her voice in the song 'Marvin’s Room' prior to its release. Lee asked only for the credit she received as 'Syren Lyric Muse,' and she did not ask for any compensation. It was only after she retained a lawyer that there was a demand for payment. Drake tried for months to resolve the matter amicably, and he now looks forward to being vindicated in court."

The Hollywood Reporter touched on the claims Lee made against the “Headlines” rapper when she filed her lawsuit on Thursday. Lee states she is the voice on the sampled telephone call in “Marvin’s Room” and that in 2010 and early ’11 they had a business and romantic partnership. In recording “Marvin’s Room,” they traded lyrics, and she agreed to work with the rapper/singer and added the hook and opening monologue. Cash Money apparently called her an “employer for hire.” She says that Drake texted her with the following statements: "U basically made that song. […] It's s--t without you."

Lee and Drizzy additionally registered the sound recording at the U.S. copyright office but broke up not long after “Marvin’s Room” was released. She claims about the song: "My works and voice are used on this work."

Lee hired a lawyer in November to pursue her case, and Drake supposedly offered her four to five percent of all publishing monies and $50,000 to get away from him. Rather than doing the latter, she took her case to the California federal court.

Do you think Lee’s claims have substance, or is she an ex-girlfriend just trying to take advantage?
