Dr. Luke Becomes Latest ‘American Idol’ Judge
It appears as if American Idol is returning to its original format, allowing people who work behind the scenes to have a say in who goes onto Hollywood. Only, instead of Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi, or Randy Jackson, popular hit-making producer Dr. Luke appears to have signed on.
Reported by Deadline.com on August 24, the producer known for many top Billboard Hot 100 hits was closing a deal with the American Idol team. For Season 13, he’s joining Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban – the only holdover from last year.
Now that Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj are off the panel and Randy Jackson, according to Deadline, is attempting to negotiate a mentorship role in place of Jimmy Iovine, it looks like American Idol has its lineup – or at least close to it.
Earlier in August, Lopez’s team had been finalizing a contract between the singer/actress and reality talent show. At the time, Will.i.am joining had also been a rumor, but even though the Black Eyed Peas singer is off The Voice U.K., there’s no word whether he will be a fourth judge, or if the show is going back to its original three-judge format. Now that she’s officially on board, Lopez is reportedly receiving a salary of $15 million.
The judges’ panel isn’t the only aspect of Idol being changed. The other big shakeup for Season 13 is new executive producer Per Blankens, who previously held a similar role on Swedish Idol.
