Demi Lovato Opens Up About Cutting
When Demi Lovato emerged in Camp Rock with the Jonas Brothers and then scored her own hit Disney show, Sunny with a Chance, it seemed like she was living the perfect life but, underneath, she was living with a lot of pain.
In 2010, she had to check into a treatment center for “emotional and physical issues” but she has never really elaborated on the reports that she engaged in cutting until this new interview in Self magazine.
She explains: "There were times I felt so anxious, almost like I was crawling out of my skin – that if I didn’t do something physical to match the way I felt inside, I would explode. I cut myself to take my mind off that. I just didn’t care what happened. I had no fear."
Fortunately, the 19-year-old X Factor judge feels like she has reached a good place. "I make time for myself and meditate," she says. "I've spent the past two years getting over an eating disorder and issues like self-harming and bipolar disorder. I have to work on this stuff every day. I'm reminded of that whenever I eat or feel down."
One thing that she’s done that maybe some of us should consider trying? She gave up her mobile phone. "I haven't used my cell in three months!" says Lovato. "Subconsciously, it was a crutch. When a room gets quiet, what do you do? Grab your phone! Now I can sit and have conversations with people."
That’s a really good point. It would be hard to give up but she’s got a very valid point!
