Dee Snider Attempting Broadway With New Album
A heavy-metal performer trying out Broadway? Dee Snider is doing his own take on popular show tunes on his upcoming release Dee Does Broadway, which comes out on May 8 through Razor & Tie. Snider, while a classically-trained singer, believe it or not, is not going for a true Broadway sound. Rather, he’s doing a rock music take on standard, well-known songs. The release also coincides with his first autobiography.
Snider, however, isn’t attempting the endeavor alone. Instead, he’s bringing on a long list of well-known and established guest stars, such as Bebe Neuwirth; Patti LuPone; Cyndi Lauper; Clay Aiken; stars of the Broadway hit musical Priscilla Queen of the Desert Will Swenson, Tony Sheldon, and Nick Adams; Mark Wood, violinist of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Dee's son, Jesse "Blaze" Snider. With his guest performers, Snider recorded songs from Cabaret, Chicago, South Pacific, Damn Yankees, Phantom of the Opera, The Threepenny Opera, Anything Goes, and Sweeney Todd, among other musicals. Because Snider is doing rock interpretations of standard Broadway fare, he intentionally avoided rock and roll musicals like Grease and Hair.
Although Snider’s stab at Broadway seems out of character, he’s not a novice to this style of performance, as, in 2010, he was added to the cast of Rock of Ages. In talking about his upcoming album, he stated to the press: "There are many who think doing an album of rocked out show tunes is pure insanity on my part. Apparently, they haven't seen any photos of me from the 70's and 80's. Could I have been in a more theatrical band? Ever since I was a kid, I'd heard the real power inherent in a lot of songs from musicals and this record gives me the chance to show it."
