Dave Grohl, Ryan Adams Do Tribute Concert for Husker Du’s Bob Mould
Yesterday, Bob Mould of Hüsker Dü and Sugar was honored with a two-hour tribute show at the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The event, See a Little Light: A Celebration of the Music and Legacy of Bob Mould, featured Ryan Adams and Dave Grohl, as well as other performers. With a simple, Hüsker Dü-like setup on stage, all performers – which also included Britt Daniel with Jessica Dobson, Craig Finn, Margaret Cho with Grant Lee Phillips, and No Age – did acoustic renditions of Mould’s songs from Hüsker Dü, Sugar, or his solo career. Mould, as well, did a five-song set.
Although still performing, Mould was considered a pioneer of alternative music in the 1980s. As far as honoring him with a tribute concert, Grohl said: "If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be making music the way I do, or play guitar the way I do. His albums have really shaped me as a musician as much as the Beatles, as much as Led Zeppelin. He’s a real hero of mine and a real American icon.”
At the conclusion of the concert, Mould told the audience: "I’m sort of speechless. The cruel joke in this whole thing is... if I didn’t have such a strange childhood, and all this anger that I was carrying around and channeling into my music, I don’t know if we would be in this spot tonight."
Still active in the music industry as a solo performer, Mould is working on a solo album but, unlike many of his contemporaries, continues to move forward rather than get caught in the trap of ‘80s nostalgia. About his role in Monday’s concert, he told RollingStone.com last week: “I’m sort of music supervising the shows a little bit, trying to get up to speed on which versions of the songs they should try. I enjoy putting shows together. Disney Hall is a great room. I think it will be pretty cool.”
