Dave Grohl Gets Godlike Genius Award
Foo Fighters frontman, Dave Grohl, has just been awarded the Godlike Genius Award at the 2011 Shockwaves NME Awards.
The trophy was handed over at the O2 Academy Brixton in London last Wednesday 23 February, after which the band surprised everyone by playing a performance of a huge 23 song set. The audience even saw the Foo Fighters premiere their latest album 'Wasting Light' in full.
As Grohl walked up to the stage to receive his award, a host of musicians congratulated him via a video montage that was played in the background. Musicians including Paul McCartney, Jack Black, Josh Homme, John Paul Jones were on the recorded video display, while the crowd gave the former Nirvana drummer a standing ovation as went up to accept his award from Roger Daltrey vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter for The Who.
Clearly, Grohl had not expected the reception he got. Standing there on the stage accepting the award, he was momentarily lost for words. Eventually he got his mind together, and said, "You guys realise they gave this one to a drummer, right? This one's for the drummers!"
On getting his composure, he went on to talk about the time he worked his way in to the O2 Academy Brixton to see alternative rock band, Pixies. The Pixies were pioneers back in the eighties who were inspiration for rock group Nirvana (Grohl's previous band). Grohl continued, saying that this award was "for Kurt [Cobain]".
He further added: "Oh, and by the way, they asked us to play tonight and we thought, 'Yeah, OK, sure.' And they said, 'Why don't you do four or five songs?' And I said, 'F*#k that, why don't we play for two f*#kin' hours?'"
The Foo Fighters then played the 23 song set. As they played their final song 'This Is A Call', Grohl paused for a moment to think about the evening before saying: "It's been a really great 16 years. I'm totally appreciative of this award."
'Rope' was the first single recently released from the Foo Fighters latest album 'Wasting Light'.
