On September 20, Columbia/Legacy will release Miles Davis Quintet - Live in Europe 1967: The Bootleg Series Vol. 1, a deluxe three CD and DVD package of unreleased or previously unauthorized live recordings of the Miles Davis Quintet from European concerts in 1967. The album highlights Davis' "second great Quintet," frequently acknowledged as one of the greatest groups in 20th century jazz, which included Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (bass), and Tony Williams (drums). Culled from television and radio sources in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, and Sweden, the package launches the record label's new Miles Davis Series.

The package highlights the beginning of Davis' transformation from traditional jazz to a more experimental approach. As the label's press release discusses, entire sets were played as one long jam with "very little beyond opening melodic statements separating one tune from the next. This [laid] the groundwork for the revolutionary and scene-changing music that [Davis] would produce over the next decade, until his retreat in 1975." Davis put the group's transformation best in his autobiography: "The music we did together changed every f*cking night; if you heard it yesterday, it was different tonight." The Quintet would disband later that year, but their jams have not been forgotten.
