Coldplay Album Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 200
Never a band to shy away from success, Coldplay has yet again reached the top. The UK band’s has debuted their album, Mylo Xyloto, and it’s already at the top of the Billboard Hot 200, pushing out 444,000 copies in its first week. They’ve beat out American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson who debut this week with her album Stronger¸ which debuted at #2. The songstress sold 163,000 copies in her first week.
The pop star actually commented on her competition with the band, “...People were like, 'Oh my God, are you kidding? Coldplay is going to kill you!' I don't care if they kill me. .. It's more like, how many people are going to buy their album, and then my album is right there, 'cause it's out too. I always think competition is healthy."
As of right now, Coldplay has the third best album debut of the year. The highest debut goes to pop diva Lady Gaga who sold 1.1 million copies of her Born This Way album in its first week. Second place goes to Lil Wayne who sold 964,000 copies of Tha Carter IV in its debut week.
Mylo Xyloto is the newest album since Coldplay’s last effort Viva La Vida or Death and All of His Friends in 2008, which destroyed the charts. There have been two released singles from this album. “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” was released on June 3rd, while “Paradise” was released in Se3ptember. Coldplay has also confirmed that Barbadian singer Rihanna will be featured on their song “Princess of China”.
It’s no doubt an odd and unique name for an album. According to the band, the album is based on a love story with a happy ending. Two people, Mylo and Xyloto live in an oppressive and urban environment and fall in love by meeting through a gang called “The Lost Boys”.
