Cher Struggles With Chaz's Sex Change

Being supportive of someone doesn't always mean that their decisions are easy to accept. Cher Struggles With Chaz's Sex Change

Even the most supportive, non-judgmental parent might have a hard time adjusting to calling their daughter a son and Cher is learning about this firsthand.

When Cher was married to Sonny Bono, they named their little girl Chastity but, today, that child is known as Chaz.  He competed on Dancing with the Stars in 2011 and many viewers expressed their outrage at the ABC show for including a transgender contestant.  Chaz’s mother was one of his biggest supporters but admits that the female-to-male gender reassignment decision was difficult for her to accept.

Although he legally changed his name in 2010, the transition began in 2008.  Chaz acknowledges that it was hard for Cher, as a mom, not because of who he was before but more due to “the loss of a fantasy that probably began even before” he was born.

Cher is known for her costumes and overly feminine style and Chaz recognizes that his mother loves “girlie stuff.”  Even without the sex change, he knows he could have never lived up to any of those expectations and, while his mother has been a major cheerleader in his corner, he gets the “sense that she’s still not 100 percent comfortable.”  An example is that she sometimes forgets to call him Chaz (even though it’s been his legal name for two years).

No one can ever really know how hard something like this is until they’ve gone through it but Cher is probably handling it better than most people.  Fortunately, the pair still seem to have a decent relationship.
