Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" is #1 - Her Journey to the Top

People who are unfamiliar with Canadian music or their version of American Idol may not know about this new artist's history. Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" is #1 - Her Journey to the Top

Carly Rae Jepsen’s single “Call Me Maybe” is literally everywhere right now – it’s currently at sitting in the #1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 – but she certainly didn’t come out of nowhere.  She’s been trying hard to achieve success for years but it took a viral video of her fellow Canadian, Justin Bieber, having a dance party (with girlfriend Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale and some members of Big Time Rush) for the world to see her true talents.  Four months later, she’s America’s darling.  But who is she?

The funny part is that, back when I was covering all things Idol, I wrote extensively about Canadian Idol (my home country as well as Jepsen and Bieber’s) and regularly had to interview the contestants.  One of these hopefuls was little miss Carly Rae Jepsen. She was adorable and completely won the judges over during her audition but eventually finished in third place.  She didn’t let this discourage her.  She immediately got to work and released her album Tug of War which contained a cover of John Denver’s “Sunshine On My Shoulders” and the title track, “Tug of War” (which is still on my iPod!) which won the “Song of the Year” prize at the Canadian Radio Music Awards.  At the 2010 Juno Awards, Jepsen was nominated in the “Best New Artist” and “Songwriter of the Year” categories.

Now, “Call Me Maybe,” which is from her 2012 album Curiosity has captivated music lovers – there are around 2 million videos online of people lip-syncing to the catchy tune.  She’s come a long way from being that first audition.  Here’s the video:
